The Deep End of the Ocean - 08/10 - Recensie van Andreas Lindahl, ingevoerd op (Engels)
The Deep End of the Ocean is a beautiful and charming score by film music veteran Elmer Bernstein, filled with warm music. The main theme, for instance, is a lively feel good ditty, often performed by the oboe (or other woodwind instruments) and french horn in unison, which creates a very warm, gentle and solid sound. Other instruments which tend to dominate are piano, guitar, strings and bells.

The "Main Title" is a beautiful cue, opening with a tender piano theme, before the main theme is introduced by the horn and oboe, supported by light, bouncy strings and bells. Throughout the cue, lighter, happier parts are varied with more relaxed, reflective, and sometimes a little sad moments, which together make for a very enjoyable listening experience. The score then goes on in the same innocent and problem free style. Bernstein writes in the liner notes that "much of the music suggests child-like memories. There is a great presence of harps, bells and musical sounds which conjure up images of childhood." I could not have said it better myself.

There are however more dramatic and dark music in the score, too, such as the nervous piano and strings in "Sam is Lost", or the same instruments desperate cries in the fourth cue. This is after all the story about an abducted child. But it is the beautiful, and warm music that dominates the score. "Home Again", for instance, features a wonderful, but short, guitar and oboe duet.

All in all, The Deep End of the Ocean is a wonderful score, which I can recommend to everyone. It's only drawback being its somewhat short length - just 30 minutes.
The Deep End of the Ocean - 08/10 - Recensie van Arvid Fossen, ingevoerd op (Nederlands)
