Drumline - 08/10 - Recensie van Jason FLZ, ingevoerd op (Engels)
In 2002 marching bands (specifically the percussion) were brought into the spotlight with the film, Drumline. The movie itself was fairly well received and did take a good look at how hard bands had to work to reach the goals they seeked to accomplish. While most of the film was a combination of pop/rap songs or the band itself, the underscore was tackled by composer John Powell.

Released only a promotional album, Drumline is a fairly short album, running at 22 minutes. Despite the short running time, John Powell does manage to infuse alot of interesting techniques into the score. Tracks like 'Gridiron' and 'The Freshman's Skills' are played like band pieces, with the stereotypical band sound of percussion and trumpets. There are three main themes in the score as well. The first is a fast paced piece that focuses primarily on the trumpets; heard mainly in 'Main Title' and 'Rythm of Drums.' The second theme is used for the main character Devon. It is mostly a mix of a subtle orchestra and piano, heard in 'Devon', 'Stirring', and 'Takes Over The Field.' The third theme, used in 'Dr. Lee', represents the band teacher. It is mostly an orchestral piece, but never gets fully fleshed out. (speaking of orchestra; 'Competition' and 'Drummer on the Sidelines' feature some very powerful orchestral passages)

For being such a short album (not much underscore in the film) Drumline sure is a fun release. As far as John Powell's scores go; Drumline may be his simplest but it sure isn't bland. The themes are fun (considering there isn't much room for development) and may even put you into the mood for marching band music. Drumline is a good example of fun composing that doesn't require too much thought or depth.
