The Closer You Get - 06/10 - Recensie van Tom Daish, ingevoerd op (Engels)
I know absolutely nothing about The Closer You Get. It gives the appearance of being a British romantic comedy and thus undoubtedly tanked up with off the wall characters. Rachel Portman hasn't quite hit dizzy heights in her film music scoring career, but seems to get a decent caliber of assignment and this kind of film is just her kind of thing. There isn't a lot to it, a main theme, variations on the main theme and a slightly random collection of pop songs.

Portman's main theme reminds me of how she might write an instrumental for Dire Straits. No, seriously. The guitar, accordion and saxophone mixture is potent and while fairly catchy during playing, if somewhat forgettable afterwards. Most of the cues take the basic idea and play with it to a varying degree, but the mood remains perky and doesn't fall into typical romantic comedy orchestral mush, which is a refreshing change.

The selection of songs are unlikely to sell many more copies of the album. I can't imagine many people thinking 'Oh yes, great, the Proclaimers AND Ricky Valance on the same album... ooh, what my heart has always desired.' OK, I did, but then I'm very sarcastic. I can't help but think that the Ricky Valance song is a spoof. It details the unfortunate history of a boyfriend who goes racing and gets into a nasty crash and dies, but doesn't forget to ask someone to 'Tell Laura that I love her' before gasping his last. Yes quite. There isn't a great deal of score, just over quarter of an hour, but in fairness anything more would outstay its welcome. Not cutting edge, but pleasant enjoyable fun.
