Mighty Joe Young - 06/10 - Recensie van Tom Daish, ingevoerd op (Engels)
Sony Classical's commendable, but over enthusiastic production of James Horner scores has yielded yet another lengthy album which pretty much keeps interesting enough over the entire time, even during the numerous lengthy cues. Sacred Guardian of the Mountain pretty much sets the tone for the more tropical sections of the score with some nice ethnic drumming and then a quite forceful version of the oft-used three chord choral opening, much like the opening to Willow among others. Strangely, in this new performance, it almost sounds like Alan Silvestri's Abyss theme played in reverse (or something!). The choir makes quite a number of appearances throughout the score mostly with the cod-African chanting a la Hans Zimmer in Power of One (or similar) and is almost always quite effective, particularly in the final 'Windsong' which doesn't seem so much as a stand alone song, but just the main theme performed in genuine ethnic lyrics (the original English ones being provided by Will Jennings). Unfortunately, no indication as to the meaning of the lyrics is provided anyway, but never mind.

There are enough action cues composed with a decent amount of flair, particularly the excellent Poachers well as the choir dominated Attempted Capture. The latter tracks are perhaps more traditional Horner action outings, but are considerably more interesting than a lot of his recent action music (Titanic for example) but not nearly as good as Mask of Zorro. I guess the biggest problem with Mighty Joe Young is that it's good without being anything special. There is nothing inherently wrong with the basic material, even if there is no sparkling main theme to tie things together, although there are a couple of repeating motives. The most prominent sounds like Jerry Goldsmith's fifth dominated The Wind and the Lion theme and the other is a descending synth noise, apparently mimicking gorilla calls (or something). Peculiarly, it sounds like Goldsmith's Poltergeist, but this could be more coincidental. Windsong isn't particularly memorable, even though the choir will probably stick in the mind more than other sections. Since at time of writing Mr Horner isn't signed up for any scores it'll probably have to do for a while and a few listens will pay dividends as it definitely gets better after a few times through and you pick up on the various motives which aren't really that obvious the first time.
