Logan's Run & Coma - 08/10 - Recensie van Tom Daish, ingevoerd op (Engels)
Logan's Run is one of those scores that many collectors used to dream of owning, but were unlikely to find a copy or at least not be able to acquire one without parting with large quantities of cash. Fortunately Chapter III have thoughtfully re-released many previously hard to find albums and to Goldsmith collectors everywhere, I suspect Logan's Run will be one of the highlights. It almost seems over generous (not that I'm complaining) to provide us with not just Logan's Run but also Comaas part of their Double Feature selection. I'm sure they would have got away with releasing them separately had they been so inclined and we must therefore be extremely grateful that they have enabled a whole new generation of collectors to hear not just Logan's Run, but also the less well known Coma.

For all the praise I've read about Logan's Run, the score is sometimes something of a mixed bag. The orchestral passages are superb in every respect, The Monument being a stand out. Starting in elegiac fashion with some wonderful trumpet solos it becomes jaunty midway through before returning to quietly expansive. Immediately after The Monument we're treated to some bracing and complex action writing in You're Renewed and again later most notably during The Key/Intensive Care which have all the hallmarks of the best of 70's Goldsmith action writing. The score is rounded out by End of the City which is another lovely orchestral rendition of the main theme. The side of the score that not all fans will appreciate is the purely or partially synthesised sections. Considering that it's from the mid 70's, the synths are a little on the dated side and sound rather kitsch, although in fairness that mirrors the plastic look of the film rather well. Feelings on the overall score might be somewhat coloured by your feeling toward the synths, but the orchestral passages are undeniably effective; alternately elegant and thrilling.

The centre of the album gives us a pretty cheesy pop renditions of the love themes from both Logan's Run and then Coma. The arrangement of the quite memorable Logan's Run melody is somewhat over the top, which contrast nicely with the more intimate slice of romance from Coma, even if the theme in this case isn't terribly memorable. Coma was a Michael Crichton directed thriller about experiments carried out on hospital patients, obviously without their consent. If memory serves, there is no score until halfway through the film, but when it does appear it's an extremely terse set of action and suspense cues. Study at Anatomy throws us straight in with fiddly, but sparsely orchestrated action that soon gives way to jangling suspense. Unfortunately, there are also some fairly naff disco 'interpretations' mixed into the score, Disco Strut being a real period piece and the truly risible disco version of the love theme. It seems a shame that Chapter III chose to leave these midway through the score rather than placing them at the end (or better removing them and replacing them with any previously unreleased underscore proper) as they cut through the incredibly well maintained atmosphere like Surfin' USA had it been placed halfway through Psycho. This is fairly modernistic stuff and might not sit too well with those used to Goldsmith's more easy style of recent years, but as an exercise in tension and orchestral ingenuity, it's something of a minor gem.

Logan's Run is almost certainly the standout item on this album which contains some truly superb action, together with more gentle, but wonderful and sustained orchestral set pieces; something that Goldsmith isn't able to do all that often, more's the pity. Coma is certainly a superior action/suspense score that makes Crichton's already creepy film a truly terrifying prospect. Both have downsides depending on your taste in early synths or disco. The Logan's Run synths actually fit really well with the lurid sets and costumes of the film, at least in the early part of the film. The orchestra then becomes more prominent against the world outside the artificial one from which Logan is on the run, but these are obviously aspects of the music better appreciated in the film itself. Two fairly sought after Goldsmith scores on one disc can't be bad and in this case, an absolute bargain for some great music and well worth investing in.
