Unencumbered by legal niceties, the Italian Great Movie Themes label draws on the soundtracks of three 1940s movies for this CD, with 11 of the 18 tracks deriving from 1944's Bathing Beauty. The picture actually marked the first starring role for Esther Williams, but her aquatic abilities are invisible in musical tracks given over to Latin swing performances from Xavier Cugat and more conventional swing work by Harry James with Helen Forrest on vocals. Here Come the Waves (tracks 12-17) is another 1944 film, this one starring Bing Crosby (who sings such standards as 'That Old Black Magic' and 'Accentuate the Positive') and Betty Hutton. Only one track, the last one, comes from 1942's This Gun for Hire; it's Frank Loesser's 'Now You See It, Now You Don't.' As befits an album that is closer to being a bootleg than a legitimate release, there are odd errors and omissions. Forrest gets her first name printed as 'Hale' at one point. Veronica Lake, who appeared in This Gun for Hire, is credited as the singer of the song, even though her voice was dubbed by Martha Mears. And there are songs that were heard in the movies that don't make it to the disc, notably Hutton's 'There's a Fellow Waiting in Poughkeepsie.' All that said, movie musical fans probably will welcome this gray market release from a period when soundtrack albums did not exist.
