Man of Galilee: The Essential Alfred Newman Film Music Collection - 08/10 - Recensie van Tom Daish, ingevoerd op (Engels)
Given the number of accolades he received and the prominence he had as head of Fox Music, Alfred Newman generally receives less attention than many of his contemporaries. There doesn't seem to be any good reason for this, but it does mean that most fans these days are less familiar with his work than that of Rozsa, Herrmann or even North. There are a couple of Alfred Newman compilations, but these are now hard to find and so Silva Screen have taken a plunge with a collection of their own. Given Newman's legendary status as one of the finest conductors of film music, it really is something of a gamble given the City of Prague Philharmonic's slightly uneven track record, but the collection is reasonably successful.
The first disc opens, unsurprisingly, with the Fox Fanfare, although something about the performance and mix make it sound just a little anemic, which is rather unfortunate. After a melodramatic opening, Street Scene is a surprisingly syncopated, jazzy piece and not a million miles away from Gershwin. The Diary of Anne Frank receives a short suite; after the surprisingly upbeat Overture, the other cues are a little more subdued and filled with heart wrenching melodies that today seem a little over the top, but are wonderfully sumptuous. The same could be said of the gorgeous main theme to Anastasia and on the theme of famous historical women, The Song of Bernadette is represented by the wonderful Overture. Even being Alfred Newman doesn't mean you're exempt from having to sound like other composers and The Mask of Zorro is a distinct homage to Korngold, although Newman's music is more light hearted and less frilly than Korngold's. Like IMAX today, Cinerama was a technological marvel rather than an artistic one, but from the epic How the West Was Won, Alfred Newman's score stands out; from the surging main theme to the comedy of Cleve and His Mule and the sweeping epic moments, this is frontier scoring at its best. Unfortunately, the performance here is a little disappointing, the syncopation of the main titles comes across as stilted and the choir are a fraction raucous at times - possibly due to an unfavourable mix.

As a stand alone concert piece, Conquest from Captain from Castile is probably one of the best known Newman tracks and the exciting and again, almost Korngoldian action fanfare is given a good performance here. The other selections on the second disc are perhaps less famous; The Keys of the Kingdom is nice enough, but a little anonymous, although the perky Nevada Smith is an upbeat title tune for a western, even if it lacks the youthful vigour of Bernstein, Tiomkin or Moross. The Razor's Edge is a more, well, seductive suite, particularly the well titled Seduction cue, which makes great use of the lush Newman string sound. Equally gorgeous is Cathy's Theme from Wuthering Heights where Newman takes full opportunity for the strings to swoon and swoop their way through, the glissando well produced in the performance here.

The album concludes with a cantata for orchestra, chorus and vocal soloists based on music from The Robe and The Greatest Story Ever Told - a sort of Biblical film epic extravaganza. In fairness, the scores are quite different, but Ken Darby did a good job of assembling the concert work, much in the same manner as was done to Prokofiev's classic Alexander Nevsky. The Prologue is surprisingly energetic, but the rest is a little more reverential, particularly the gorgeous Promise of the Holy Spirit. I'm not always convinced by the inclusion of vocal soloists as they aren't part of the original scoring and for my money, they disrupt the more liturgical feel that Newman was originally aiming for. Otherwise, a refreshingly different way to turn film music into concert hall music. Overall, the playing is generally reasonable, even if it doesn't come close to the originals and only How the West Was Won has serious flaws. The liner notes provide plenty of information about each film and score. Not perhaps a definitive Newman collection, the quality of performance isn't always there, but an ideal place to start for discovering the music of a somewhat under represented Golden Age composer.
Man of Galilee: The Essential Alfred Newman Film Music Collection - 08/10 - Recensie van Arvid Fossen, ingevoerd op (Nederlands)
