Serenada Schizophrana

Serenada Schizophrana is Danny Elfman's first concert piece, written as a commission for the American Composers Orchestra. The six movement piece received its first performance in Carnegie Hall in February, 2005, conducted by Steven Sloane. The composition got a lot of praise from the critics, something that isn't too common when film music composers enter the often pretentious concert world, writing "serious" classical music. Later, Elfman also adapted the music for the IMAX film Deep Sea 3D. The version now finally recorded by The Hollywood Bowl Orchestra under the baton of John Mauceri, is more or less identical to the original work, with some minor changes.

The first movement of Serenada Schizophrana is called "Pianos" and is a lively composition for orchestra and several pianos. It opens with soft pizzicato strings, woodwinds and piano and its dark tone make it sound a little like a softer version of Elfman's score for Sleepy Hollow. It soon gets more dramatic, however, with frantic string ostinatos reminiscent of Elfman's Red Dragon. And there's plenty of pianos, of course. "Blue Strings" is the longest movement in the serenada and in many ways it's also the weakest. This string based piece offers some tension when brass and snare drums enter the mix, but all in all this movement is largely minimalistic and introspective.

The third movement, "A Brass Thing", is more interesting and memorable, with Elfman jumping effortlessly between tango and jazz rythms. This is classic Elfman, and recalls some of the underscore for The Nightmare Before Christmas, changing direction every other bar. Snare drums create an almost militaristic tango and march mash-up for a in parts of the cue, while other sections sounds like something Leroy Anderson could have written. "The Quadruped Patrol" is an amusing little movement, just under three minutes long. Phrases, or rythms, are presented by one section of the orchestra and is mimiced, or answered, by another. It grows more violent and dark towards the end of the piece, with organ, female choir and lots of staccato.

"I Forget" is a definite highlight. Scored for orchestra and female choir - singing in Spanish - this is delightfully upbeat, packed with the classic Elfman sound. It's incredibly catchy and ends with a lovely little waltz by solo saxophone, backed up by brass and choir. And the ending sort of fades out in a very effective way. Great stuff. "Bells and Whistles" ends the serenada with some really bombastic and grand music, where the entire orchestra - and the choir - is involved.

What all of these movements have in common, apart from the typical Elfman sound, is a strong dose of rythm and ostinatos. The Serenada Schizophrana is an excellent concert piece, where Elfman is allowed to expand and really explore many of the techniques and sounds that always make his scores so effective and memorable. With the praise this work has received, I'm sure that Elfman will have to get used to writing music for the concert hall as well. And I can't wait to hear what he will come up with in the future.

The disc ends with another concert piece by the composer, called "Improv for Alto Sax." It's a cute little work that makes use of one of Elfman's themes for Tim Burton's Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

Na lange tijd gaf Danny Elfman, heel verrassend, een concert weg voor alle fans en iedereen die van zijn composities houdt. Samen met dirigent en componist John Mauceri kwam de filmmuziek van Elfman in de concertzaal terecht. Hier werden opnames van gemaakt en op deze cd gezet. Het uiteindelijk eindresultaat is niet slecht, maar ook niet goed.

Om lak te hebben aan de tracklist begin ik bij het nummer 'I Forget'. Een ongelooflijk mooie compositie, die begin met een klein opera-achtig gezang van enkele sopranen. Begeleidt door orkestrale muziek die we kennen uit bijv. Batman ontvang je bij dit nummer gratis kippenvel.

Helaas zijn de rest van de nummers niet echt muziek die lekker wegluistert. Bijvoorbeeld het nummer 'The Quadruped Patrol' is een nogal een onrustig nummer, vergelijkbaar met de composities van John Williams uit 'Minority Report'. Vervolgens staat er gek genoeg veel underscore op het album, terwijl de totale luisterduur van 46 minuten al vrij kort is. Het laatste nummer 'End Tag' is vervolgens om je dood aan te ergeren. Underscore en eigenlijk geen uitspattingen, terwijl je die wel zou verwachten.

Danny Elfman en consorte hebben me met dit album teleurgesteld. Had er namelijk hoge verwachtingen van en dacht dat dit weer een aanvulling zou zijn op de schitterende collectie filmmuziek die Elfman heeft opgebouwd. Voor fans van Elfman zal dit album smullen zijn, echter voor anderen is het een niet zo toegankelijk album. Op het nummer 'I Forget' na is het een niet zo goede soundtrack geworden.
Serenada Schizophrana....uiteindelijk helaas niet een van de beste muziek van Danny Elfman!
