By the time Ellington died in 1974, his place in American culture was cemented. In his definitive History of Jazz, Ted Gioia wrote: “Nowhere was Ellington’s genius more evident than in his ability… to achieve simultaneously the highest rung of artistic achievement and remain a celebrated mass-market entertainer.” Without doubt, one crucial rung on that ladder was Duke Ellington’s soundtrack to Anatomy Of A Murder, hailed as a landmark, it's available here in its original form for the first time since its release in 1959.
