Buddy - 06/10 - その改訂 Tom Daish, 提出された (英語)
Caroline Thompson's first directorial feature was the 1994 version of Black Beauty, which was blessed with one of Danny Elfman's most genuinely haunting and subtle scores. In keeping with the anthropomorphic animal theme, Buddy is the story of a gorilla raised by a rich lady in the 1920's and his eventual return to the wild after his more animal nature is un/fortunately revealed. Sort of a Mighty Joe Young in reverse. The film didn't make much of a splash, but was at least endowed with a score by Elmer Bernstein.
Buddy can broadly be divided into two; starting playfully, but becoming more subdued and serious in the later tracks, save for the Credits. It does, however, have the unfortunate distinction of not really being the best of either side of Bernstein's musical personality. This is not to say that the music is bad, far from it, the jaunty Beginnings, To the Zoo, Bath and Animal Riot are a fluffy, enjoyable way to start, but in common with the score as a whole, Bernstein's thematic material just isn't that together or memorable. Red Scarf and Disaster are were the darker edge begins and Attack contains a rather freakish ondes martenot glissando to punctuate the orchestral writing. Loss and Storm Fear are suitably melancholy, but again, are a touch unremarkable. Sadness opens with a brace of brass and then churning strings which is more striking, leading into the gorgeous New Life, containing some lovely 'cello and horn writing. The Credits reprise the more playful opening music and end the score on a high note.

If that all gives the impression of the score being disappointing then, I suppose, in some ways it is, but that is not to say there aren't some enjoyable moments. Bernstein is one of those composers whose least interesting scores are invariably better than many composers' best work and this is far from Bernstein's least accomplished effort. His effortless string textures are exquisite as always, but he has written other scores with the same lightness of touch and with considerably more memorable material.
BUDDY is the true story of Gertrude Lintz, an eccentric 1930's socialite who is the most generous animal keeper since Noah. It's the story of her love for animals, but especially her love for Buddy, the gorilla.

From the composer Elmer Bernstein of the hit films TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD, THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN, THE GREAT ESCAPE, HEAVY METAL and many, many more.
