Adagio For Orchestra is a tribute to two of my friends who died in the same week: Jerry Goldsmith and Susan Bennett King. I had never written an adagio before, but I wanted an homage to how they lived instead of the fact that they had died. They were both people of incredible talent and power. Both of them were an inspiration to me and I certainly was not alone.
August Redemption is a piece about dying and living. It is programmatic in the sense that it takes place on one night in August in St.John's Hospital when looked very possible that I was going to die of a ruptured abdominal aorta.
The An Ouverture to a Time is written in the hope that powerful nations can come together and realize that there are parts of the world that need attention and help; especially Africa. The piece opens with a medley of national anthems of powerfl countries and sequences to an African dance.
