Lesbian Vampire Killers

In my book anything by Debbie Wiseman that gets a release is worth adding to one’s collection. I am glad to say that this score is no exception and in fact for me was a pleasant and welcomed surprise, I got it into my head that because the movie is a send up of vampire/horror movies, that the composer would reflect this in her musical score. OK granted there are the odd few comical sounding cues throughout but for the majority of its running time this is a serious and rather ominous sounding soundtrack, which includes fearful and sinister passages that combine interweave and play alongside eerie female solo voice (Hayley Westenra) and pounding percussion that is laced and enhanced by the utilisation of harsh brass, choir and vigorous strings. It is a formula or style that has worked so many times before in films, the composer providing music that is exactly the opposite of what is expected, i.e.: romantic sounding themes for violent scenes, and in this case serious and almost gothic sounding compositions for situations of both a lighter and dark nature. Playing away from the action as it were, or playing it straight. This in my ever so humble opinion has got to be one of Debbie Wiseman’s best scores. I found it mesmerising and also attractive, in that I wanted to play it again over and over each time it had finished. The orchestration and construction of the work is flawless and the music flows wonderfully and just sweeps over the listener creating the desired goose bump effect on more than one occasion. The opening track is particularly impressive, it begins with sparkling and shimmering effects that are underlined by the use of solo female voice, this opens the cue which soon builds into a powerful and heady composition for full orchestra and choir, the result is just amazingly effective. This is a commanding work and one that I think will be a favourite amongst collectors, it’s a long time since we have had a work such as this, plus the fact it includes UNDER THE MOON OF LOVE by Showaddywaddy, got to be a bonus. A great score, go buy it.
