Saw

Of all the horror franchises out there, Saw is by now one of the most well known. The story is simple, a madman puts people in various traps to prove his sick point about not appreciating life. At first, the concept was fresh and original. By the seventh endeavour, however, it became so drawn out and bland that no one really cared. Talk about beating the dead horse. For all seven projects was composer Charlie Clouser, whose works have almost been completely horror.

The main theme for the series is heard for the first time here in 'Hello Zepp', 'Zepp Overture', and hinted at in 'X Marks the Spot.' The theme is iconic, simply put. Unfortunately, the rest of Clouser's underscore is not as memorable or listenable as you would expect. Sadly, the Zepp theme is the only music on the entire album worth listening to. The other times Clouser relies on earsplitting heavy metal rock beats or droning synth.

For the film, the music of Saw is very effective and does feature one of the most iconic horror themes since Halloween. Unfortunately, the album release falls very short of listenable. The 10 minutes of the Zepp theme are as good as it gets. Otherwise, unless you enjoy headbanging music, you will hate the score for the film. As for the songs on the album, do I need to bother?
