“Copperhead” speelt zich af tijdens de Amerikaanse Burgeroorlog. Het verhaal speelt zich af ver van de slachtvelden. ‘Copperheads’ verwijst naar Democraten die gekant waren tegen Abraham Lincoln en de burgeroorlog. Een film over recht op vrijheid en vrije meningsuiting. De film werd door de Amerikaanse filmcritici maar lauw onthaald, waardoor de film op weinig bijval kon rekenen bij het grote publiek.
De muziek werd gecomponeerd door de Fransman Laurent Eyquem. Net als de film dreigt ook deze score gedoemd te zijn om in de vergetelheid te geraken. Dit is jammer, want Eyquem componeerde een mooie, aangrijpende score vol dramatiek en passie.
De eerste track ‘Copperhead’ is een prachtig thema die soms doet denken aan de succesperiode van James Horner. Piano, hobo en viool, aangevuld door een symfonisch orkest vormen de ingrediënten van deze magistrale openingstrack. De gehele CD, met uitzondering van twee traditionele stukken, omvat een klassieke, melancholische symfonische score. Laurent Eyquem maakt overvloedig gebruik van prachtige piano en viool solo’s en weet hiermee de emoties van de personages en het verhaal perfect weer te geven. ‘Sunday Morning’ straalt warmte uit, ‘The Picnic’ romantiek en ‘The Enlistment’ loopt over van Amerikaans patriotisme.
Samengevat een luisterervaring met emotionele diepgang. En dit kan misschien voor vele luisteraars ook het grote nadeel zijn van deze score. Eyquem is een componist die ik zeker van nabij ga volgen. Benieuwd wat we nog te horen zullen krijgen.
