Joy Ride - 02/10 - Critique de Tom Daish, ajouté le (Anglais)
Like many of the promising new composers of the 1990's, Marco Beltrami looked destined for great things. Unfortunately, like many of his contemporaries, his latter efforts have failed to live up to expectations. If Cliff Eidelman got stuck in a rut with increasingly bland family dramas, Marco Beltrami has been lodged into teen slasher territory with nowhere to hide. His scores for the Scream Trilogy were decent enough, although his best work to date is probably Mimic which despite being a dreadful film, inspired Beltrami to produce a great contemporary horror score.
Joy Ride is a film I shall avoid at all costs by the looks of it and frankly I'm inclined to say the same for the score. It is undoubtedly fully functional within the film itself - in fact much of it is like percussive sound effects. This is atmosphere and tension building music, but with little of the musical presence of his previous scores. I received this the same week as Goldsmith's classic, The Omen expanded edition and the quality of Goldsmith's writing compared to Beltrami's is all too apparent. It may seem harsh to compare it to one of Goldsmith's finest scores, but even compared to minor Goldsmith, The Haunting for example, Beltrami is still falling very short of the mark.

There are a couple of decent moments, Ice Man Cometh features a few nifty string runs, but these are few and far between. If some indication of the style of writing is needed, then consider that someone was testing a loud car engine outside my house at the time of listening and writing the review and I honestly thought the occasional engine growl was a sample from the score. It wasn't of course, but it could easily have been. There isn't really much I can recommend, it's moody, atmospheric, but has almost no memorable components in either melody or orchestration. As joyless a ride as they come.
