Once Upon A Time - 07/10 - Critique de Anthony Aguilar, ajouté le (Anglais)
The tv series Once Upon A Time has charmed its way into millions of Americans' homes, making it a probable mainstay on ABC. At least some of the show's success must be due to its music by the great Mark Isham, who has clearly put much thought into the show, its themes and their development. After waiting for a little while, we have been given this 11-minute suite of music from the film.

Fans of the series will recognize all of the themes and motifs. The 5-note descending motif that accompanies the title card of every episode makes its debut in track one. It is startlingly simple, yet in its orchestration quite effective. Fans will also recognize the theme for Belle as well as another theme that I can only classify as a theme for 'hope'. The latter is a positive, upbeat, tolling theme which seems to play whenever something is going right or characters are having a deep moment with each other in the show.

One aspect of Isham's work here that I find striking is his inclusion of electronics. Mainly used for beats and tempo, these are not what one would expect in a fantasy score. Indeed they do sound oddly out of place at times. Isham is most likely attempting to represent the two worlds being portrayed: our real world and the fairy-tale world. I do wish, though, that he would really compose something musically that would differentiate one world from the other. He could use sound design or subtle differences in orchestration. Perhaps he has and I have simply failed to notice! One theme which does not pop up in this suite is the wonderful theme for Snow White and the Huntsman. It is an heroic, dramatic piece that perfectly accentuates moments of excitement and drama between the two characters. I do wish it could have been included.

The suite will be a treat for fans of the show and an adequate introduction for the wary. Isham is a talented musician, his themes all appropriate and a joy to listen to as well. While the recording might not be as wet as something like The Lord of the Rings, Isham has still managed to conjure up music that evokes the feeling of fantasy. With the low budget he has likely been given, this is a significant accomplishment. At $3.95 the suite is cheap, so you literally have almost nothing to lose by downloading. Recommended.
