Le Bon Plaisir - 08/10 - Critique de John Mansell, ajouté le (Anglais)
The third compact disc release from new French film music label Music Box Records, is the dramatic and also emotive score to LE BON PLAISIR, which was composed by Georges Delerue in 1984. As always Delerue produced a haunting work and one which has the unmistakable subtle and touching musical fingerprint of this French musical giant all over it. Delerue possessed an ability of combining woods, strings and at times piano, harp and harmonica to create some of the most beautiful and plaintive but enduring melodies which seemed to invade the listeners mind and stay there for ever more. LE BON PLAISIR is certainly no exclusion from that rule and for me is one of the composers most entertaining works for the cinema, simply because it is not only an endearing and highly emotional work but also it is a score that is varied and interesting. At times the style is neo-classical, with romantic and lustrous sounding themes that are graceful and understated, but the score is also made up of musical passages that are of the more dramatic nature which add trepidation and nervousness to events. But even when the composer employs this type of scoring there is an underlying hint of a melody which seems to work its way to the surface, delicately unfolding and blossoming into something that is haunting and very beautiful. As in track number 10, LE COMPLOT (1st version), where the composer introduces the cue with a harpsichord which slowly and quite deliberately plays a four note motif, this is then joined by low key strings and solitary woodwind, the music being performed here is slightly hesitant sounding, but still has a richness and melodic content which allows the emotive side of the composition to shine through, it is in no way a sweeping or lush piece, in fact it is more of a downbeat and cautious atmosphere that is being purveyed but Delerue still engages and delivers a magical sound that enthrals the listener utterly. For me track number 12, CLAIR ET LA PRESIDENT is one of the scores highlights, a mournful sounding cello is utilized to great effect and is the principal instrument throughout the cue, this heartrending and compassionate sounding theme is further built upon by the composers use of strings which embroider and support the cello. Track 13 is also an entertaining composition, BALLADE AMERICAINE, is typical Delerue or should I say classic Delerue, as a lazy sounding harmonica solo is underlined by layered strings and punctuated by harp to create an uncomplicated and hauntingly beautiful piece which I am sure will be listened to over and over. As with the majority of scores by Delerue there is a sound that is so emotive and sad present, this I think comes to the surface in its most pure and striking form in track number 18, SUICIDE D’HERBERT.

All in all this is a score that I would recommend highly and once again Music Box have delivered an eye arresting and informative booklet to accompany the compact disc. The score was originally issued on LP, but this CD edition contains an extra 15 minutes of music. Well worth adding to your collection..
