River Queen - 09/10 - Critique de John Mansell, ajouté le (Anglais)
Karl Jenkins is probably one of the most respected and highly regarded composers of what we call classical or concert hall music today, his THE ARMED MAN - A MASS FOR PEACE has been performed on well over 300 occasions in the UK alone during the past four years and the compact disc of that work achieved Gold disc status within a very short period of time within the UK. His REQUIEM also went to No 1 in the UK classical charts. In 2005 he was awarded the OBE by Her Majesty the Queen and in 2006 was made a Doctor of music by the University of Wales. This is the composer's first work for the cinema, and I am positive that it will certainly not be his last. RIVER QUEEN is set in NEW ZEALAND in the 1870s, it tells the story of Sara O'Brien (Samantha Morton) who has grown up among the soldiers who guard the frontier on the Te Awa Nui-The Great river. She becomes pregnant by a Maori boy and gives birth to a son, the story then jumps forward seven years and her child BOY is kidnapped by his Maori Grandfather. Sarah is abandoned and shunned by her soldier Father (Stephen Rea) so she turns to Doyle (Keifer Sutherland) for help. The score that Jenkins has penned is mainly orchestral, but the composer also utilises choir and wordless female vocal, which are emotive and affecting in their sound and also the way in which they are placed within the film. Jenkins incorporates the traditional song DANNY BOY within his score which gives the work an appropriate Gaelic sounding foundation, a foundation that Jenkins utilizes to build upon and adds his own unique and powerful themes to the mix to create a score that is not only tuneful and dramatic but highly emotional and haunting. The composer also creates some wonderfully melodic sounding themes which are fashioned to represent the Maori characters and culture that is depicted in the movie, Jenkins balances both styles and at times combines elements of each within cues to create a sound that is highly listenable and above all original. Both styles come together flawlessly in track number 12, BLINDFOLD, where we hear plaintiff sounding flute which is underlined by subdued strings depicting the Gaelic influence, this is further embellished by solo violin with female voice being introduced with a short chorale enhancement the violin then returns and plays in unison with the wordless female vocal both of which are then supported by the string section and woods bringing the cue to its conclusion. The score also has its fair share of dramatic set pieces, martial sounding in places but again the composer infuses a sound that is based upon ethnic sounds from New Zealand.

I am loathed to try and compare this with any other scores, but if I was pressed to do so I would have to say that RIVER QUEEN is a fusion of styles that maybe were reminiscent of Trevor Jones’s majestic themes for THE LAST OF THE MOHICANS, but also there is a sound within this score that is vaguely evocative of Morricone's style in his scores for THE MISSION and QUIEMADA. Jenkins use of choir is stunning and he has written so many themes that it is hard to believe that all this wonderful music comes form just one movie. It is lush, poignant, romantic, dramatic, diverse and above all it is a fine example of quality film music. Recommended.
