The Cole Porter entry in Columbia House's The Great American Composers series may have contained performances of Cole Porter's best songs as performed by Columbia Records' artists over the years, but it did not contain Porter's most popular song hits of the 1940s and '50s, 'True Love,' 'I Love You,' and 'Don't Fence Me In,' and a few of Porter's earlier hits, among them 'Let's Do It (Let's Fall in Love)' and 'What Is This Thing Called Love?' were also missing. Those omissions are eliminated in this second volume of Porter compositions, but otherwise the 42 selections are devoted to lesser-known Porter pieces, making this very much a 'best of the rest' volume. Porter's work is sufficiently high-quality that that means only a slight diminishment of wit and melody; it's just that there are fewer songs here you'll be able to hum and sing along to the first time you play the album. Both of the two discs in the set are arranged in the same way: after an overture (Can-Can on Disc One, Kiss Me, Kate on Disc Two), the selections are roughly chronological by recording date, so that about the first half of each disc consists of recordings made around the time the songs were introduced in musicals and films, and the second half of later recordings, often by classic pop singers like Doris Day and Tony Bennett. There are several selections from Columbia's original Broadway cast recording of Kiss Me, Kate (the better-known songs from which appeared on the earlier set) and its soundtrack to the television musical Aladdin. These and the recordings from the '30s and '40s give the best sense of Porter's work, sometimes matching artist to song appositely. For example, Kay Kyser's group of madcap singers proves perfect for handling the zany 'Friendship' from DuBarry Was a Lady. But there are cases of obscure or unlikely singers, such as actors George Maharis, Sal Mineo, and Tony Perkins. And not all the songs are up to Porter's usual standard. As such, this is an uneven album, though it has its moments and will provide some additional satisfaction to listeners who enjoyed the first volume.
