MouseHunt - 08/10 - Critique de Tom Daish, ajouté le (Anglais)
Comedy scores with wit are in fairly short supply. Almost all either Mickey Mouse every pratfall resulting in an interminable album, or are sentimental beyond words and result in a tooth rotting treacle laden experience. While it's true that Alan Silvestri doesn't always avoid those symptoms, he is more likely to rise above average than most and Mouse Hunt is one of his most charming and witty comedy scores. It helps that the film itself was a myriad of comic invention about a mouse outwitting two men determined to remove it from their inherited property. OK, it doesn't sound like a great premise, but with great physical comedians Nathan Lane and Lee Evans in the leads, the results were terrific.

Someone once commented that the reason Alan Silvestri is a natural musical comedian is that it fits perfectly into his own musical persona. Rather than 'doing' comedy, he simply scores a light hearted version of his regular style. The Main Title for Mouse Hunt is one of his most buoyant inventions led, surprisingly, by the delightful and memorable main theme on bassoon. As a result, the orchestration must be kept light, which prevents it becoming too portentous. The main theme would be great on its own, but this is a tune laden score and Silvestri seems to invest every notable occasion with a memorable melody. The Funeral Prologue is a Bride of Frankenstein spoof horror, complete with cheesy church organ, while Chez Ernie is laid back, American man about town jazz. Perhaps the most lovely theme is the lilting melody introduced in Dying Wish, which is as lovely as anything Randy Newman has penned for his Pixar scores.

Comedy action music can be pretty unlistenable - the aforementioned Pixar scores from Mr Newman can get quite chaotic at times and not in a good way, but here, Silvestri uses the sprightly main theme and simply ratchets up or down the drama. Nail Gun has a few scary brass blasts, but Hot Tuboggan mixes the highly dramatic with turns that are a lot more fun. The way the theme is constructed is ideal for action since it moves up slightly as part of its structure, thus the amount and number of times it increases in pitch can indicate increased level of tension, all while encompassing variations in orchestration and tempo. What is even more impressive is that Silvestri never lets the theme outstay its welcome, the sheer number of other themes goes some way towards producing what, in half an hour, is a score with more invention than some manage in 80 minutes. One of Silvestri's best comedy scores, a delight throughout.
