Hollywood owes much to both the concert halls of Europe and to World War II. It was the torturous conditions of Europe at the time that forced most of the continent´s great composers to flee their homeland and seek a better life in America. A great many of them found their way to Hollywood. The most famous of these refugee composers were Erich Wolfgang Korngold, Miklos Rozsa, Max Steiner and Franz Waxman. Varese Sarabande Records has, over the years, released a great many recordings of music by both Korngold and Rozsa. Over the last couple of years we have dedicated an entire new series ('Legends of Hollywood') to the music of one of film music´s greatest and most innovative masters - Franz Waxman.
Franz Waxman led a variety of musical lives as a composer, conductor and impresario. He was born in Konigshutte, Upper Silesia, Germany in 1906. Waxman began his professional film career in Berlin by orchestrating the musical score for The Blue Angel. In 1934 he came to the United States and for the next 32 years composed and conducted 144 motion picture scores, he was nominated for the Academy Award 10 times and won twice in a row for Sunset Boulevard in 1950 and A Place in the Sun in 1951. Waxman´s extremely distinguished list of credits includes memorable scores for Peyton Place, The Bride of Frankenstein, The Philadelphia Story, Rebecca, The Nun´s Story, Taras Bulba and Sorry, Wrong Number.
In 1962 Waxman was chosen to be the first American, as part of the cultural exchange program, to conduct the major orchestras of the Soviet Union. He died on February 24th, 1967.
This third volume in our series of recordings with Australia´s Queensland Symphony Orchestra features seventy minutes of music. Included among this collection are some of Waxman´s lesser known but equally exceptional scores such as Elephant Walk, The Silver Chalice, Mr. Skeffington, Destination Tokyo and The Furies plus the composer´s 'Nightride for Orchestra' from Night and the City, 'Cafe Waltzes' from Hotel Berlin and 'Dusk: A Setting for Orchestra' from Night Unto Night.
