The Fly - 09/10 - Crítica de Jason FLZ, Publicado en (Inglés)
I will automatically admit here that I don't like Howard Shore. His music, for me personally, always sounds overly dramatic and takes too much advantage of the orchestra. I've never cared much for any of Howard Shore's scores, but I will admit that his score to 'The Fly' (a 1986 Cronenber gross-out fest with great acting and a Beauty and the Beast style story) did catch my attention. While the music does occasionally go too far with the drama, Shore actually does craft an impressively powerful score.

The score can be seperated into 3 parts. The first deals with the film's main theme. The theme crops up numerously and represents Seth Brundle's increasingly problematic situation and the strain it puts on his and Geena Davis's relationship. The theme itself is powerful and serves as a great transition piece, used in; 'Plasma Pool', 'The Last Visit', 'The Phone Call', 'The Stairs' and fully in 'The Finale' (easily the best track on the album.) Some of the lighter material for the score could also be grouped here. 'Particle Magazine', 'Steak Montage' and 'Success With Baboon' offer some of the more calming music on the album.

The second part of the score revolves around the quieter, more mysterious moments. It also introduces a secondary theme. The additional theme is a 2-note motif that is heard primarily in 'Main Title', 'Seth Goes Through', 'Ronnie's Visit' and 'The Street.' The third part of the score could be considered the horror material. Here, Shore manages to capture a strong Goldsmith feel. Small element of 'Alien' are leaked in here as well as some great orchestral scares ('The Creature', 'Maggot/Fly Graphic', etc.) Some of the horror material works great for Shore and it would be interesting if he were to venture into this venue again.

Unlike most of Howard Shore's music, The Fly really does stand out. The beautiful finale piece on the album as well as some of the darker moments are really highlights here. The film itself is worth checking out and the music just as much so. If any complaints, it would be that the sound quality could use a little upping. I, for one, would like to see a re-recording with digital sound. Otherwise, a very good album.
