This limited edition single CD release on Moochin' About, brings together the work of jazz pioneer Sidney Bechet 3 French films, SERIE NOIRE, L INSPECTEUR CONNAIT LA MUSIQUE & AH! QUELLE EQUIPE! In early 1955 came his first opportunity as an actor (and musician) in the French film Serie noire , a Pierre Gaspard-Huit melodrama directed by Pierre Foucaud, in which Sidney plays alongside such distinguished actors as Erich Von Stroheim, Henri Vidal and Robert Hossein. He appears and performs his own music, in a number of nightclub scenes. The tune A moi d payer is devoted to Monique Van Vooren, whose role as a realist , declamatory singer, sums up the whole heavy mood of the film. Trottoirs de Paris is an attractive, swinging blues while the nostalgic Blues dans le blues is entirely given over to clarinettist Andre Reweliotty. In May 1955, Bechet was given the leading part in the Jean Josipovici film Blues , otherwise entitles L inspecteur connait la musique . His partners were Viviane Romance, Jacques Bodoin and Claude Luter. As in the earlier film , most of the action takes place in the nightclub, the plot revolving around a bandleader-clarinettist, Harris Louis (Claude Luter), who accidentally kills one of his musician colleagues (Sidney Bechet) during a fit of despair at not being able to finish a blues composition he was writing! The music is excellent, with both Luter and Bechet in impressive form. The principal piece is a dynamic Bechet composition based on the chords of I Got Rhythm and entitled Halle Hallelujah, a recurring theme that underscores each and every twist of plot in this police drama. The film also draws upon a number of older Bechet tunes especially adapted for the circumstances. The medley Les homes sont genereux / L enchainee d amour is based first on Temperamental then on Old Stac O Lee Blues, recorded in 1946 wth clarinettist Albert Nicholas. Similarly, Le blues de mes reves in fact Orphan Annies Blues, a piece Bechet had recorded in 1949 with trumpeter Bill Coleman. And I had it But Its All Gone is an updated version of a piece recorded in 1947 with clarinettist Bob Wilber. Claude Luter today remembers with an affectionate smile how scared Bechet was that something might go wrong during the various rehearsals and takes of the scene where Luter was supposed to kill him by thumping him over the head with his clarinet. In 1956 Bechet made his last film Ah Quelle Equipe! Directed in colour by Roland Quignon. Sidney here features prominently as a Jazz musician in a scenario once again set up in a fashionable nightclub where he can also be found improvising with touch and imagination as he attempts to win over a little black orphan or to soothe a malaria victim. He displays impressive verve and talent as an actor If these three films all very typical of the 1950 s, are of any interest today, it is thanks solely to the overwhelming presence of Sidney Bechet. Invaluable documents, they offer us a wonderful illustration of the playing and personality of a great Jazz musician. PLEASE NOTE.. THIS CD WILL NO LONGER FEATURE THE BALLET 'LA NUIT EST SORCIERE' AS PREVIOUSLY ADVERTISED (SORRY..)
