The Contender / Deterrence - 06/10 - Crítica de Tom Daish, Publicado en (Inglés)
Not in fact a film about boxing, but one concerning the race to be president, the contender in question played by the wonderful Joan Allen. The film also features Gary Oldman as a journalist trying to dig up details of an alleged sordid past to discredit her. Apparently an extremely good film, it's not one that has received a great deal of publicity, but might well be worth checking out. I didn't know what to expect with Larry Groupé's score, as he's not a composer I've heard from before and while this isn't exactly a terrifically groundbreaking score, it's still an low key, but very enjoyable orchestral effort.

While my preconceptions about the score weren't strong, I wasn't really expecting a gentle mix of Shaiman's American President (a fairly predictable precedent I suppose), but with the slightly more restrained feel of Williams' Saving Private Ryan. Indeed, the occasional similar use of woodwind clusters and brass chorales do echo Williams' magnificent effort on a few occasions. The opening track is a fairly heraldic, but that is dispensed with quickly and the score settles into a low key mixture of the aforementioned brass chorales and woodwind, backed by gentle strings. The thematic content isn't hugely striking and even after several listens I can't honestly recall all that much of the melodic material, but recurring motifs crop up through the score and the texture is maintained throughout. The final couple of tracks, most notably in the rousing The Speech it perks up considerably for a bracing finish, rounded out by a more restrained coda in the shape of the End Titles.

I suppose more than anything this score is a frustration since it evidently shows a personable composer with plenty of his own skill, even if it's not the most distinctive of musical voices. The result being a somwhat less interesting version of scores that have gone before. The album is enjoyable enough and at least doesn't get bogged down in a mire of repeating synths and actually makes good use of the orchestra. A pleasant and enjoyable score, even if it doesn't stick in the mind much afterwards.
