Secret Weapons Over Normandy - 08/10 - Crítica de Tom Daish, Publicado en (Inglés)
There is a pleasing certainty of product with a Michael Giacchino album and if you liked one, you'll like them all; so it is with his latest score for a big budget computer game. Although it sounds like it ought to be, Secret Weapons Over Normandy is not related to the Medal of Honour games which made his name, but this makes little difference to the general approach or quality of the writing. About the only thing substantially different is the lack of the Medal of Honour theme, but his new fanfare style melody is a more action orientated distant relative and given a thorough and exciting workout during the opening track. The overall tone of the album is more akin to the first Medal of Honour, with an emphasis more on the heroism and drama of war than on any personal struggle.
Although John Williams influences are clear in his earlier efforts, here it is Ron Goodwin whose shadow is cast across several of the tracks, but again, Giacchino makes the style his own. As is the nature of these games, there are plenty of action cues, but also a good number of more suspenseful interludes. Dunkirk Harbour has a terrifying (in terms of difficulty for the players) horn theme which pushes the cue along with great momentum, while Battle of Britain opens with a little more suspense, but builds with interjections of the main theme and some Goodwin style brass rhythms and woodwind runs. The energy level in the latter half of the cue is brilliantly sustained, with a superficial simplicity that belies the density of ideas and complex - but not intrusively so - orchestrations.

Despite the title, the game globe trots quite significantly and there are some effective splashes of local colour. Although somewhat superficial, it does add a nice extra layer of variety, notably the Taiko drums of The Siamese Coast, The Rescue of Pauline and Midway. As the action moves back to Europe, the colder climates of Copenhagen, Stalingrad and Norway are accompanied by a return of the choir. Of the less action packed tracks, perhaps the finest is Fjords of Norway which is both a potent dramatic accompaniment to the location as well as an effective build up of tension. Perhaps the most exciting input from the chorus is in an brief, but explosive passage from Stealing the Me262 which ices an already exciting musical cake. The Normandy Coast concludes in typically bracing style, but as ever, Giacchino's music peaks early so nothing less than an apocalyptic finale will suffice.

As for his earlier scores, the Northwest Sinfonia perform Giacchino's complex music with technical accomplishment and panache. The liner notes include a track by track guide, indicating what the cue covers and the themes contained therein, confirming the impression of a score of greater complexity than its superficial bluster might suggest. A second disc of short cues that serve as stingers to the full length tracks is a nice bonus. The disc also contains five short films about the score, including footage from the recording sessions and one containing the performance of the entire Main Theme. These make for enjoyable additions to a lavishly packaged album, complimenting another exciting score from Giacchino.
LucasArts, in association with La-La Land Records proudly presents the sensational, full-throttle orchestral score to the thrilling, high-flying LucasArts videogame SECRET WEAPONS OVER NORMANDY™. Acclaimed composer Michael Giacchino captures all the pulse-pounding excitement of this new game with a rich, powerful music score to rival any of the classic WWII adventure films. Performed by the Northwest Sinfonia. Includes a special BONUS CD-ROM featuring additional music cues and an exciting behind the scenes look at the game, the score and its composer. 12-Page CD Booklet features detailed liner notes.
