Bambi II - 07/10 - Review of Jason FLZ, submitted at
Disney sequels are unnecessary, and Bambi 2 is no exception. Rather than a heartfelt take on the original, their sole purpose is to sell. The only positive for the film was that Disney hired composer Bruce Broughton to score. Broughton may very well be the most underused composer in Hollywood, having not scored a feature film for over a decade. It sure was nice to see him make a good return with one of his strong suits, animated films.

Of the 30 minutes on the album, only 8 minutes are reserved for Broughton's score. The songs on the album aren't great (mostly filler) but they aren't terrible either. As for Broughton's score, it is a nice little treat. Most of the music is lighthearted and bouncy, especially in the 'Being Brave' cues. 'Bambi's Dream' features the score's main theme and will have you immediately thinking Classic Broughton. The last track is also a soft and beautiful cue.

After the long absence of Broughton, seeing him return to any project is a nice breath of relief. While Bambi 2 may not be the best project for any composer to leap back up on, it does prevail due to Broughton's great writing for animated features. Despite the lack of a score, the songs are ok and there are a few good nods to the original Bambi.
