De muziek bij deze laatste documentaire Julia is van Rachel Portman, die er in haar eigen typerende stijl een score voor componeerde.
Het album opent met een fraai, wat melancholiek thema, dat prachtig op de cello gespeeld wordt, onder begeleiding van piano en lichte houtblazers, waarbij de piano voortdurend in een vlotte ritmiek te horen is, die dan weer wat minder aanspreekt. Die ritmiek is overigens wel heel erg eigen aan de muziek van Portman. De themamelodie horen we nog een aantal malen terug in de score.
In de meeste tracks is de piano toch wel het hoofdinstrument, waarbij die piano veelal wordt bijgestaan door houtblazers en lichte strijkers, zoals we van Portman gewend zijn. Verwacht hier geen score die afwijkt van haar reguliere muzikale stijl, een stijl overigens die meestal best wel in de smaak valt, maar bij deze score is dat duidelijk minder het geval.
De piano speelt regelmatig z'n steeds herhalende riedeltjes, arpeggio's, waarmee Portman haar melodieën opbouwt. De tegenmelodieën komen dan vaak van de houtblazers, waarbij de strijkers ondersteunend zijn. Een enkele keer wordt daar een vleugje percussie aan toegevoegd, maar dat blijft minimaal. Arpeggio's zijn vaak erg mooie versieringen, maar Portman past ze een beetje mineurig toe en die voortdurende herhaling van haar arpeggio's begint mede daardoor nogal eens wat te zeuren.
Soms is de muziek kennelijk bedoeld voor wat meer grappige scenes, want dan zet ze haar piano in als een deuntjesmachine en vult dit aan met staccatoklanken van houtblazers. 'Spam and Pineapple' is daar een typerend voorbeeld van. Ook 'She Could Ad Lib' heeft die wat komieke stijl, waarin stemmen in diezelfde staccato-stijl meezingen met de melodie, die op de instrumenten al evenzeer in staccato wordt gespeeld. Dat begint na een minuut wel een beetje te irriteren.
In de documentaire wordt veel over de Franse keuken getoond, waar de hoofdpersoon zo door bevlogen was. Portman illustreert die scènes met muziek waarin een accordeon het Franse element verklankt. En dat doet ze fraai, met een mooie 'Franse slag', ook in stijl en arrangement, waarbij toch steeds weer de piano die vaste riedeltjes speelt, die Portman steeds een beetje staccato speelt. Dat maakt dat de muziek een wat volkse kleuring heeft, niet alleen in de 'Franse' tracks.
Soms is de muziek wat dramatischer, maar ook dan blijft er steeds die deuntjesachtige manier van componeren, die de ene keer duidelijk op de voorgrond staat en een andere keer juist meer naar de achtergrond is gezet. Toch maakt dat staccato-achtige dat de muziek een beetje die volkse, deuntjesachtig kleuring houdt, die toch wat minder aanspreekt, en die de muziek erg afhankelijk maakt van de melodie en de tegenmelodieën en instrumentaties. Dat laatste bestaat bij Portman vooral uit lichte instrumenten als houtblazers en violen.
Een erg fraaie track die duidelijk minder deuntjesachtig is, is 'Tasting as You Cook', waarin Portman een stijl hanteert die zomaar uit de koker van Philip Glass had kunnen komen. Ook de track 'Paul's Unwell' heeft een wat meer gedragen stijl en is daardoor duidelijk aangenamer en dat geldt ook enigszins voor de afsluitende track, waarin opnieuw de accordeon te horen is.
Kortom, met haar muziek voor de documentaire Julia heeft Rachel Portman een score gecomponeerd in haar typerende eigen stijl. Ze heeft een stijl met een hoog deuntjeskarakter, wat zeker niet iedereen aanspreekt, en ook deze score heeft dat typerende, wat volkse karakter. Haar muziek heeft hier nogal een staccato-achtige stijl, waardoor het heel goed bij een komedie zou passen, maar hoewel de film wel een optimistische kleuring heeft, is het zeker geen komedie. Haar stijl heeft wel dat luchtige en wellicht hebben de regisseurs dat juist prettig gevonden. Maar om los van de film te beluisteren valt toch wat tegen, vooral ook omdat ze veel gebruik maakt van riedeltjes, steeds herhaalde en nogal staccato gespeelde arpeggio's. Al met al valt deze score van Portman een beetje tegen en de waardering komt dan ook niet hoger dan 58 uit 100 punten.

There’s definitely something in us that goes back to our earliest days on earth and being fed by our mothers. Food gives nurture and cooking for others is a way of giving love. What can be more delightful than writing music for such a character as Julia? The directors Betsy and Julie were up for having fun in the score and words such as bad ass, edgy, trapped housewives preparing Spam and Pineapple dinners, sex, sensuality, and nostalgia were used to describe what they wanted from the music. So, as well as the theme of food and love, I didn’t shy away from being at times bold and funny with the score. At others it needed to be full of love and yearning. The film is a rich canvas for writing a score and I loved composing its music.”

About Rachel Portman
Born in West Sussex, Rachel began composing at the age of 14 and read music at the University of Oxford, where she became interested in writing music for student films and theatre productions. She gained experience writing music for drama in BBC and Channel 4 films, including Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit, Mike Leigh’s, Four Days In July and Jim Henson’s Storyteller series.
Since then, Portman has written over 100 scores for film, television and theatre, including The Manchurian Candidate (Jonathan Demme), Oliver Twist (Roman Polanski), Beloved (Jonathan Demme), Benny and Joon (Jeremiah Chechik), Life Is Sweet (Mike Leigh), Never Let Me Go (Mark Romanek), Grey Gardens (Michael Sucsy), The Legend of Bagger Vance (Robert Redford), The Duchess (Saul Dibb), One Day (Lone Scherfig), The Lake House (Alejandro Agresti), Mona Lisa Smile (Mike Newell), The Human Stain (Robert Benton), Their Finest (Lone Sherfig), A Dog’s Purpose (Lasse Halstrom), Mimi and the Mountain Dragon for the BBC and Godmothered (Sharon Maguire). Most recently Rachel wrote the score for the documentary Julia which chronicles the life of TV chef and author Julia Child, due to be released in 2021.
Rachel became the first female composer to win an Academy Award, which she received for the score of Emma (Douglas McGrath). She was also the first female composer to win a Primetime Emmy Award, which she received for the film, Bessie (Dee Rees). She has received two further Academy Nominations for The Cider House Rules and Chocolat (Lasse Hallström), which also earned her a Golden Globe Nomination as well as Bafta nominations for Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit and The Woman in Black. Rachel was BBC Radio 3’s Composer of the Week in 2018
Rachel has written an opera of Saint Exupery’s, The Little Prince for Houston Grand Opera as well as a musical of Little House on the Prairie. For the BBC Proms concerts, Rachel was commissioned to write The Water Diviner, a dramatic choral symphony and Earth Song, a commission for the BBC singers of a 20 minute choral piece. Rachel wrote an orchestral piece entitled Endangered performed at the World Environment Day Concert, at the National Centre for the Performing Arts, Beijing.
In 2020 Rachel released her first solo album Ask the River. Rachel is an honorary fellow of Worcester College, Oxford. She lives in London with her husband and three daughters.
