Chez Marvel, Les Gardiens de la Galaxie proposait une playlist de titres minutieusement confectionnée par James Gunn et diamétralement opposés au score orchestral de Tyler Bates. Chez DC, Birds of Prey peut se targuer de posséder une compilation de titres aussi déjantée que sa bande-originale ! Toutefois, cette dernière s’affiche relativement peu sur le devant de la scène et cela, au profit de cette playlist parfois lourdingue qui tend à imiter son homologue issu de chez Marvel. Pour ainsi dire, le travail de Pemberton reste dans l’ensemble quasiment inaudible pendant toute la durée du film. Outre les nappes atmosphériques associées à Black Mass (Ewan McGregor), on remarque une répétition de deux motifs qui gravitent uniquement autour du personnage de Margot Robbie. Pemberton cible très sûrement les différents aspects de sa personnalité : en premier lieu, l’excentricité sonore de ‘The Fantabulous Emancipation Explosion’ fait brillamment jaillir la folie d’Harley Quinn. L’écho saccadé de cette voix féminine à la fois aliénée et bohémienne semble résonner dans sa tête et marquer son émancipation vis-à-vis du Joker (‘Bruce and the Beaver’, ‘The Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn’). Ensuite, les explosions électroniques de ‘Danger Danger’ (co-écrit par le rapper Juicy Fruit) assurent un véritable spectacle pyrotechnique auditif qui réapparaîtra au cours des plus grosses séquences d’action du long-métrage (‘Roller vs Rollers’, ‘Fight Together’). Pemberton citait pourtant « un thème pour Huntress », « un thème pour Montoya » et « un thème pour Black Canary » en complément d’Harley Quinn… On retiendra plutôt le motif amusant à peine audible d’un oiseau siffleur pour Black Canary (‘Bad Ass Broad’) ainsi que le motif à la flûte qui s’associe à quelques guitares italiennes pour Huntress (‘The Bertinelli Massacre’, ‘The Bertinelli Revenge’). D’autre part, la formation des Birds of Prey lors du troisième acte n’a déjà rien de transcendant dans sa mise en scène et manque clairement d’un thème fédérateur percutant, chargé de souligner l’unité du groupe (‘Work Together’). Doté d’une grande nervosité et d’un côté pop non négligeable, le score de Pemberton reste pourtant très effacé mais lorsqu’il a l’occasion de s’émanciper de cette playlist omniprésente, il peine à briller par ses variations peu séduisantes ni mémorables…

'One of the best things about writing this score was the fact I felt Harley Quinn as a character would be into anything – I can see her listening to whatever she wants: opera, metal, hip-hop, EDM, rockabilly, gospel, pop. I always felt she didn't really care for one thing – she'd absorb them all and not give a f*** if anyone thought it was cool or not. So, I felt I'd do that with the music. In the same way she dresses like no one else, pulling disparate styles together to make something her own, I wanted to do the same with the score.
Then couple that with a crew of other great larger-than-life characters and the completely unique take on Gotham that director Cathy Yan has created, a world with a kaleidoscopically colorful palate, you have something very special to inspire you.

In Warner Bros. Pictures’ “Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn),” Margot Robbie (“I, Tonya”) returns as Harley Quinn, alongside Mary Elizabeth Winstead (“10 Cloverfield Lane,” TV’s “Fargo”) as Huntress; Jurnee Smollett-Bell (HBO’s “True Blood”) as Black Canary; Rosie Perez (“Fearless,” “Pitch Perfect 2”) as Renee Montoya; Chris Messina (“Argo,” TV’s “Sharp Objects”) as Victor Zsasz; and Ewan McGregor (upcoming “Doctor Sleep,” the “Trainspotting” films) as Roman Sionis.
Newcomer Ella Jay Basco also stars as Cassandra “Cass” Cain in her feature film debut. Directed by Cathy Yan (“Dead Pig”) from a script by Christina Hodson (“Bumblebee”), the film is based on characters from DC.
Robbie also produced, alongside Bryan Unkeless and Sue Kroll. The film’s executive producers are Walter Hamada, Galen Vaisman, Geoff Johns, David Ayer and Hans Ritter. Joining Yan behind the scenes was a creative team comprised of director of photography Matthew Libatique (“A Star Is Born,” “Venom”); production designer K.K. Barrett (“Her”); editor Jay Cassidy (“American Hustle,” “Silver Linings Playbook”) and editor Evan Schiff (“John Wick Chapters 2 & 3”); and costume designer Erin Benach (“A Star Is Born”). The music is by Daniel Pemberton (“Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse”).
