A Scene at the Sea

A Scene at the Sea was the first collaboration between director Takeshi Kitano and composer Joe Hisaishi, also well famous for his work with Hayao Miyazaki (Spirited Away, Castle in the Sky, Princess Mononoke…)

A Scene at the Sea was the first collaboration between director Takeshi Kitano and composer Joe Hisaishi, also well famous for his work with Hayao Miyazaki (Spirited Away, Castle in the Sky, Princess Mononoke…)

Takeshi Kitano always had a very precise idea of which role that music had to play in his pictures. For A Scene at the Sea, he asked Joe Hisaishi a simple and tuneful score.

The Japanese composer aimed to refine at most his themes: the main theme orchestration only consists of synthesizers and a discreet piano – Hisaishi’s favourite instrument – along with a cello and a feminine voice. But less is more and this minimalist formation does not prevent a very inventive and expressive melody.
Then the album features many versions of the main theme, along with a great version of “Clifside Waltz” for piano and cello.

With a sober instrumentation and a simple – but not simplist – feeling, the themes from A Scene at the Sea come to complete the film’s narration, not only commentate it.
These melodies obsess the audience’s mind late after the viewing of the film.
