Game Of Thrones: Season 2 - 09/10 - Review of John Mansell, submitted at
Another journey filled with intrigue both sexual and political which is set in the unforgiving mythical land of Westeros. This is the second series or season of the highly successful HBO television show GAME OF THRONES, also making a return is composer Ramin Djawadi who created a perfect musical backdrop for the first series and repeats his triumph musical achievements with more familiar and new themes for this second outing. Performed by the Czech Film Orchestra and choir the theme and the score has an epic and grand presence to it, the composer again relying upon the use of imaginative and powerful percussive elements and overlaying these with strings and woods that are themselves enhanced and embellished by brass and choral support. Djawandi,s explosive and enticing opening theme is now a familiar one and sets the scene wonderfully each and every time it is heard. Its dark but rich almost Gaelic sounding tones prepare one for another episode that will be brimming with excitement and drama. Years ago there was a certain amount of snobbery amongst film music collectors when it came to music from the small screen, and music fans that leaned towards music from television were somewhat brushed aside as were composers who wrote predominantly for TV, well I am glad to say that this snobbery has been eradicated and its thanks to scores such as this that this has come to pass. GAME OF THRONES may be a small screen production but its values and its presence are certainly not. Plus its musical score literally oozes sounds that are epic, poignant, romantic and grandeur. The music for season one of this tale was imposing and haunting enough, but the composer further re-enforces his presence and command of the situation with his throbbing and potent thematic powerhouse of a score, in my opinion season 2 of GAME OF THRONES has outstripped season 1, not only as a series but also in the music department, it is like the composer was experimenting in season 1 and in season 2 he has brought his ideas fully to fruition and treated us to a smorgasbord of musicality that is bursting with colours, textures and style. Djawandi entices, manipulates and delights with his wide and sweeping soundtrack, conjuring up numerous nuances and passages that underline, embellish and support fully the curious and fabled world of Westeros. A veritable explosion of styles, sounds and themes that will linger long in the mind of the listener. Recommended.
