An interview with Kasper Winding, composer
• What is your musical formation? What lead you to film music?
I grew up in a world full of film, my father and step father are directors, and i had an uncle that owned a movie theater. So for me the line between music and pictures have always been pretty blurred.
• How were you contacted to score this picture?
I was first contacted by the editor Valerie Loiseleux about a meeting with the director Sophie Fillieres, they had seen a movie with a score of mine, i can’t remember witch one now.
• How did the collaboration with the director go? A few words on the creative process…
I have to say it was pretty painless. Sophie and Valerie seemed to have total trust in me which was fantastic.
• What type of music did you aim at creating?
How did the recording go?
To me La Belle et La Belle is a very french film. I remember when i was a kid my parents quit often took me to see a lot of french movies like Truffaut, Louis Malle and Godard, i did not understand much, but what I loved even as a kid was the music of George Delerue and Michel Colombier, so in a way i think my score to La belle et la belle is pay back to them in my own way.
• And the usual question: which role does music play in a film according to you?
Sound is the most direct line to emotion so music is a very big part of the experience. That’s why the composer has to be very careful as the wrong music can completly destroy the whole film. I also think it’s extremely important that the director knows why they want music. We composers are not there to save the movie, but to enhance it. That’s why I feel Hollywood gets it wrong very often, where efficiency seems to be the brief more then substance.
