Battleship - 07/10 - Review of John Mansell, submitted at

A blockbuster in every sense of the word. BATTLESHIP is an exciting and definitely a relentless fast paced romp. The big battle scenes and shoot outs with invading aliens and also the magnitude of the fx in this picture obviously called for a score that was just as big and powerful. Well I am glad to say that composer Steve Jablonsky has pulled out all the stops and provided the movie with a soundtrack that matches the grandness and also the pure high octane action content of the storyline. This is a score that combines symphonic with synthetic and fuses them with relevant ease to create a unyielding and potent work. Maybe at times electronics do get the upper hand as in track three FULL ATTACK, which is a little ott for me but that is a personal view and as with any review its all down to individual taste, I might say its to much but someone else would want more. BATTLESHIP is certainly a score that commands attention and as it is such a high action movie it would be wrong not to score it in this way. There are many crashes and clashes within the soundtrack strident strings that are supported by proud sounding brass flourishes and even more jagged sounding brass stabs, with heavy percussion that booms out and a plethora of electronics that all combine in a great and grand work that matches wonderfully the images up on the screen. As to whether it makes for a good listening experience is another story, it is an exciting and edge of the seat listen, but soothing and romantic its not, so if you are looking for lush melodies and poignant tone poems stop right there, but if it’s a full on unrelenting knock em down and drag em out score you want, this is the one for you.
