THE DEAD is a horror movie that has at its subject matter the ever popular scenario of Zombies and a mans battle against them and his search for his son amongst all the carnage. I will say that it is a movie that although gruesome, frightening and gory in places is also absorbing and at times makes one stop and think. Set in West Africa it contains a musical score which is the work of British born Indian composer and producer Imran Ahmad. This is an attention-grabbing and most of all original work for this genre, granted, it does contain the usual atmospherics and the jagged and cutting musical stabs which have the ability to jolt the listener and also add impact and depth to the proceedings on screen, but it is more than just another horror soundtrack, it is a score that is astutely constructed, and well deliberated upon when it comes to the actual placing of the music cues within the movie. This to me sounds as if it is a soundtrack that is in the main constructed from synthetic components and samples with a scattering of conventional instrumentation, and an effective use of percussion, ethnic sounds and voices throughout, the percussion being urgent, threatening, vibrant and most of the time throbbing, the voices male and female are chilling and earthy, adding much to this already unique score. The aural contributions coming courtesy of, Eritrean singer Saba Tewelde and kora from Gambian virtuoso Jally Kebba Susso.
Woodwind instruments enlarge and support the central musical passages and also generate subtle melodic phrases that effectively calm the listener and put one at ease but still remain edgy in their overall sound and implementation. It is the driving percussion pooled with eerie voices and effects that become the heart of this work and it is a blending of these sounds that are so effective within the environment of the movie itself. They successful create an atmosphere that is not just anxious but vexing. These elements also become an interesting and unsettling listen away from the images, but at the same time the work is so original that one cannot do anything but listen. I think I am correct when I say that this is the composers first full length feature, he has worked on a number of shorts and also been involved with the music for documentaries before but never a full length movie. If I am right and this is his first effort for a feature I cant wait to hear what he will come up with on future projects.

I was particularly drawn to the end theme on the soundtrack, an eerie breath effect begins events and then the percussion kicks in with an earthy sounding female voice above it, the voice is pushed along by the pulsating and rhythmic drums which are them selves supported and punctuated by strings and bolstered by effectual use of synthetic sounds and more percussive elements. It is an infectious if not ghostlike and unsettling composition, but at the same time it is an attractive and alluring cue. I recommend this score and also advise you to buy the download and look out for more from this composer, he is original in his style and sound and like a breath of fresh air in the arena of film scoring.
