Mudbound is the upcoming drama film directed by Dee Rees (Pariah, Bessie). Set in the rural American South during World War II, Mudbound follows the McAllan family, newly transplanted from the quiet civility of city life and woefully unprepared for the harsh demands of farming. Despite the grandiose dreams of Henry, his wife Laura struggles to keep the faith in her husband’s failing venture. Meanwhile, Hap and Florence Jackson – sharecroppers who have worked the land for generations – struggle to build a small dream of their own despite the rigidly enforced social barriers they face. The war upends both families’ plans as their returning loved ones forge a fast but uneasy friendship that challenges the brutal realities of the Jim Crow South in which they live. Mudbound releases courtesy of Netflix on November 17th, 2017. The score to Mudbound was composed by newcomer rocker-turned-composer Tamar-kali. Described by the Hollywood Reporter as “expressive and distinctively varied”, Tamar-kali’s compositions employ a rich assortment of instruments and themes to bring the audience into the bleak world of World War II-era American South farm life. An original song written by Mary J. Blige for the film is also included on the soundtrack.
