Life

The music to Life was composed by Swedish composer Jon Ekstrand, who crafted a score that sets a brooding and ominous mood for the film.

Life is a terrifying sci-fi thriller about a team of scientists aboard the International Space Station whose mission of discovery turns to one of primal fear when they find a rapidly evolving life form that could have caused extinction on Mars, and now threatens the crew and all life on Earth. Starring Jake Gyllenhaal, Rebecca Ferguson, and Ryan Reynolds, the film is directed by Daniel Espinosa and written by Rhett Reese & Paul Wernick.

The music to Life was composed by Swedish composer Jon Ekstrand, who crafted a score that sets a brooding and ominous mood for the film. The orchestral music builds expertly before giving way to the sheer terror of being pursued in an isolated otherworldly environment.
Life marks Ekstrand’s sixth project with director Daniel Espinosa, having previously composed music for his films Babylonsjukan, Outside Love, Snabba Cash, and Child 44.

Since 1999, Ekstrand has worked and contributed as a composer or a sound designer on several feature films, television movies, TV series and short films.
When working for Owe Svensson from 1997 to 2001 (sound designer for Ingmar Bergman, Bo Widerberg and Andrei Tarkovski), Ekstrand discovered his passion for the art of sound and music in cinema. Since then, Ekstrand has become one of the most prolific film music composers to come out of Sweden.

Director Daniel Espinosa says about Ekstrand: “And then there’s the fact that he is brilliant. It comes from his soul, of course, but also from those secret spots we visited together. From that odd music listened to when we were lost and reimagining our future. He kept that up. I think that must be what he does when he watches our pictures: imagine, dream… And pour his creations out into his work.”

“Daniel always invites me early in the process,” says Ekstrand. “He sends me the script and wants to hear my initial musical ideas. I always like to visit the set which gives me inspiration in the early writing stage. We talk about other films and musical references and what kind of character the music should have, and what instrumentation is the right feel for this film.”
