In 2007 Michael Bay's film Transformers surprised audiences everywhere and became a massive success. In 2009 the sequel, Revenge of the Fallen broke box office records but left everyone feeling let down and disgusted. Finally, in 2011, the final film of the series has been released to fairly good word of mouth. For the music comes series composer Steve Jablonsky whose first score to Transformers was actually good, while the sequel score was garbage. How does Dark of the Moon hold up? Well let's find out.
Revenge of the Fallen suffered from an overuse of electronics and heavy rock style music. Dark of the Moon manages to make a turnaround at least. For the most part, Dark of the Moon has a heavy Inception/Dark Knight feel to it. Electronics are mixed with broad, sweeping orchestra to create feelings of heroism and bravery on the Autobots part. Unfortunately, the primary themes for the Autobots and Decepticons aren't really stated here (with the exception of the awesome use of the Autobot theme in 'The World Needs You Now'). It's mostly loud brass for the Autobots and synth for the Decepticons. For the character of Shockwave, however, Jablonsky squeezes out a delightfully menacing theme that I will admit is pretty kick-ass. The battle music for the film is a really great return to the original as well. Rather than the annoying interruption of synth as in ROTF, Jablonsky really does pump out the orchestral themes worthy of any Trailer music company.
I will admit that I loved the original score to Transformers when I heard it. When ROTF came around, I was sorely disappointed in the quality of the score and the album presentation. With Dark of the Moon, Jablonsky shoots more towards his score for the first Transformers, painting the characters in broad strokes with the orchestra. The chorus works great as does the synth, not an interruption as was the last score. Unfortunately, the lack of themes or interesting motifs (aside from the last few powerhouse tracks) really does keep this score from being as good as the first. For those who do want see Jablonsky work out a fairly good score though, Dark of the Moon is perfect.
