Water for Elephants - 09/10 - Review of Jason FLZ, submitted at
In recent years, James Newton Howard's talent has been mostly used for scoring political thrillers and action films. When it was announced that he would write the music for Water For Elephants, a romantic drama about a boy who finds love in a traveling circus, there was a sigh of relief. And rightfully so, as Water for Elephants is one of Howard's best efforts in recent memory.

'Did I Miss It' immediately sets the stage (no pun intended) for the score to follow. It's a beautiful mix between piano and orchestra, offering a very soft and resonating melody. For the location of the circus, JNH offers some very interesting ideas, from fast paced guitars to softer motifs hinting at a magical and romantic setting. The score to Water for Elephants is very melodic, a good example being the orchestral cue 'Jacob Sees Marlena' or the suspense filled and guitar flavored 'Jacob Returns'. An interesting thing to note, JNH toysaround with the film's setting by occasionally infusing some lounge jazz throughout the score, occasionally even tossing some circus style music in as well. The album concludes with the beautiful and dramatic 8 minute cue 'The Stampede-I'm Coming Home'.

Water For Elephants is a beautiful, romantic, magical, and powerful score. It captures the tone of the film perfectly and still manages to throw in some fun little orchestral concepts. It is easily one of the scoring highlights of 2011 so far.
