Clue - 07/10 - Review of John Mansell, submitted at
Based on the Parker Brothers board game CLUE or CLUEDO. CLUE THE MOVIE (1985) is an entertaining and rather amusing madcap comedy thriller, and has a plot that oozes mystery and a frenzied air of silliness. The music for this dark satire is the work of John Morris, who is probably best known for his association with film maker Mel Brooks. The composer worked on a number of productions that were helmed by Brooks, including THE PRODUCERS, YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN, BLAZING SADDLES and SILENT MOVIE for which the composer created an almost non stop score that punctuated and complimented the fast paced storyline perfectly. Morris also won acclaim for his score to THE ELEPHANT MAN and created a tense but tongue in cheek soundtrack for the Mel Brooks parody of Hitchcock movies HIGH ANXIETY. CLUE-THE MOVIE contains a dramatic yet comedic sounding score, and it is the music that in the most part steals the limelight, Morris,s at times the skulduggery on screen being supported by rich and luxuriously dark passages, that take on a role all of their own becoming not just a background score, but an integral component of the movie, in fact I would even go as far as saying the music seems to take on a personality of its own and at times if the music was not present the scene or punch line would probably not work or have as much of an impact. The composer perfected this type of scoring whilst collaborating with director Brooks, and seems to have further fine tuned his approach within this particular production. He utilises to great effect prim and proper sounding strings and harpsichord which are both supported by brass and punctuated by subtle utilization of timpani when all these components are brought together they create an atmosphere that seems to inform the watching audience that all is well. But Morris’s score is multi faceted and has various edges to it. At times it contains some almost Herrman-esque interludes that raise their head in a menacing fashion to instil and evoke an atmosphere of foreboding and uncertainty. Also it has a handful of cues that are of a low key variety (not many I grant you), but these sporadic quieter interludes bring a respite to all the high drama and farce within the score. The ingenious main theme for the movie, sets the scene perfectly for what is to follow, and is an infectious composition, that is represented in various arrangements, in fact there are nearly as many versions of the central theme on the compact disc as there are alternate/suggested endings to the actual movie. Like his scores to the Mel Brooks movies, Morris has created a musical soundtrack here that punctuates each and every move that is being made on screen, every dark deed and blundering moment is enhanced and elevated further by the composers contribution. It is an interesting and also an entertaining example of the composers work as it is a soundtrack that posses the elements of mystery and foreboding as well as a good helping of wackiness. Recommended.
Presenting the world premiere release of renowned composer John Morris’ (YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN, BLAZING SADDLES, SPACEBALLS, THE ELEPHANT MAN) original orchestral score to the beloved 1985 Paramount Pictures comedy CLUE: THE MOVIE, based on the famous board game and starring Tim Curry, Madeline Kahn, Christopher Lloyd, Eileen Brennan, Martin Mull and Michael McKean and written and directed by Jonathan Lynn. Having gathered a notable, devoted cult following since its initial theatrical release, CLUE: THE MOVIE sports a wonderful score by Morris - one that deftly weaves wit, slapstick, mystery and suspense with a masterful touch. Produced by Dan Goldwasser and mastered from 1/2 inch, 3-track Paramount vault elements by Mike Matessino, this special limited edition release features exclusive liner notes by film music writer Daniel Schweiger, including comments from director Jonathan Lynn. This is a limited edition release of 3000 units.
