Cinema Paradiso - 10/10 - Review of Tom Daish, submitted at
Giuseppe Tornatore's film is, as the title suggest, about cinema itself, imbuing it with a mystical quality as a medium for romantics and misty eyed sentiment. Of course, it's pretty well always been a commercial juggernaut, but Tornatore does manage to convince us that it's far more than that, as it tells (in flashback) the story of a young boy and his growing up in a small village under the watchful eye of the local cinema projectionist. It isn't all as soft focus as all that, mainly toward the end when the 'now' part of the story restarts with more regret and feelings of loss. For such a mixture of the sweet and the bitter, Ennio Morricone's music is an absolute delight.

It is with good reason that Morricone starts many of his concerts with the main themes from Cinema Paradiso. They are not big and flashy, but gentle, intimately scored and while admittedly fairly sentimental, always tinged with hint of sorrow and regret. There are several themes, the main theme, obviously introduced in the opening track starts for piano, but adds gentle strings and occasionally saxophone. The Love Theme in the track of the same name is of course more romantic, although everything is so tinged with romance that naming it as such becomes almost redundant. The pace of the score doesn't vary to any great degree, it is generally intimate affair, but unlike so many similar drama scores, has such a strong emotional core and melodic grace that it never becomes boring. Morricone spins several other melodies which are similar to, but sound like they could easily be variations on the major themes which ensures a perfectly flowing tone, but without overt repetition.

The two most notable changes in direction occur during Movie Theatre Ablaze which is turbulent and fairly forthright in its treatment of the danger. Similarly, Fugue, Search and Return introduces a pounding piano motif, along with harsh string chords, but this eventually gives way to the main theme and a somewhat relief inducing finale. From American Sex Appeal increases the density of the orchestration for the main theme to provide the emotional highlight of the score in a truly swooning paean to the cinema as it covers a cinematic montage sequence in the film.

The album ends with two quite charmingly different cues, Toto and Alfredo turns pits the Childhood theme against a bouncing string figure that is quite disarming and very sweet. For Elena is a quite sombre finale with a slightly discordant version of Love Theme for Nata. Perhaps the epitome of Ennio Morricone's more nostalgic sweep. There are no fancy orchestrations or strange instrumental effects, just an enchanting mixture of piano, strings and woodwind which makes this an essential in any Morricone collection. It is staggering that Morricone did not win an Oscar for the score as it is not only a gorgeous stand alone musical work, but outstanding score within the film itself. If he cannot win for this, then his chances seem low overall, now if that isn't something to worry about, I don't know what is.
