The Mothman Prophecies - 05/10 - Review of Jason FLZ, submitted at (English)
In 2001, the Mothman legend came to the big screen. Starring Richard Gere, Mark Pellington's horror thriller takes a look at the mysterious entity haunting a Virginian town. It's a dark and creepy thriller, with impressive cinematography and eery visuals. For the music, Pellington re-teamed with composing company tomandandy to invest a dark and moody score. Unlike Arlington Road, tomandandy had to take on the job completely by themselves.

The way the soundtrack is set up is that each track is a 'movement'. Each individual track is actually made up of several smaller cues to create a full flowthrough; much like the soundtrack for Event Horizon. tomandandy's work on the film is interestingly diverse. Unlike most of their other horror or thriller scores, which are mostly synth noise and screeching guitars, The Mothman Prophecy actually does showcase the company's surprising knack for orchestral work. When the orchestra or piano is used, it actually creates a moody feeling without stooping to their typical synth sound. That being said, the orchestral work isn't really memorable or thematic, but it still is a nice effort.

Outside of tomandandy's orchestral material, the darker portions of the score are genuinely creepy. Alot of it is synth noise with added effects but rather than being typically droning, it is actually kind of disturbing. Not to say it's easy to listen to. The wailing guitars and constant barrage of electronics get annoying after a bit (the only real highlight comes with the sinister beats in 'Movement 7'). All of tomandandy's score is featured on disk 2. Disk 1 is primarily a collection of out-of-place rock songs and eclectic material that I can't even categorize.

The Mothman Prophecies is a fine effort from tomandandy. Rather than stick to the same tired effort of overusing synth noises and harsh sound, they do manage to infuse some nice orchestral themes in. The overall effect of the score is increasingly creepy and, at times, disturbing. Not an easy score to listen but a much better effort from the composing team.
The Mothman Prophecies - 08/10 - Review of Arvid Fossen, submitted at (Dutch)
