How to Make an American Quilt - 07/10 - Review of Tom Daish, submitted at (English)
How to Make an American Quilt makes a good companion piece to Little Women, although in this instance, the story covers more than a century, the quilt an unsubtle metaphor for the rich tapestry of life. Thomas Newman's score is on the same kind of musical territory as Little Women, but more restrained and with a greater sense of melancholy running throughout. The tone is immediately set by the quietly luminous Quilting Theme, a lovely, pastoral tune with Newman toning down his usually fragile string textures and replacing them with something a little warmer. Indeed, the score bears very favourable comparison to something like James Horner's lovely Spitfire Grill, right down to the occasional folksy guitar interlude, notably during the enigmatically titled track, Crow. However, the style is unmistakably Newman throughout.

'The Life Before' introduces the score's other most memorable aspect, a slightly bluesy, hummed female vocal, which brings back fond memories of Fried Green Tomatoes, although the overall effect here is more subtle. Without wishing to resort to cheap puns (but I will anyway), the rest of the album is patchy, if only because the non score cues are liberally dispersed throughout. It's frustrating to have a couple of songs within a Newman score, but with so many, plus the brevity of many of Newman's cues, it means the album becomes a somewhat disjointed experience. However, the original music shines, especially in the longer tracks such as An American Quilt and the surprisingly surging final cue, The Diver.

The source cues are all good unto themselves, but would have been better all together, leaving Newman's music to envelop the listener without distraction. Although Newman's contribution is under half an hour, the music is still well worth hearing and if not quite as memorable as Little Women and hampered by the unfortunate production, How to Make an American Quilt is still well worth seeking out.
