Blood+ - 09/10 - Review of Chris R., submitted at
Mark Mancina is a very talented composer who for some reason or another doesn't take on very many assignments. Having been an associate of Zimmer for the longest, helping him on projects such as The Lion King, that when Zimmer was asked to write music for the anime Blood+ + that Zimmer felt it would be appropriate to ask Mancina to write for it, which is one of the best choices Zimmer has ever made. Mancina approaches this score with two very strong themes for the two vampire queens. The theme for Saya is ultimately expressed in the cue The Grand Theme; With such a strong string and snare drum ostinato playing beneath a horn section that yields one of the greatest and most heroic themes ever heard. From this theme it plays under most of the other cues in some variation or another, my favorite being in Saya-Nara, and The Final Battle. The theme for the other sister, the villan of the story, is expressed in full in the cue Diva. Diva expresses the ultimate sadness of her character through a full orchestral performance that is masked by the vocals of singer Elin Carlson, who delivers one of the finest vocal performances I have ever heard. Her voice reaching such a pitch that it would make most sopranos jealous. The minor theme is the one that mixes the most with Diva's theme and it is for the vampires of Diva. Given a minor theme at the start with a slow building baseline, it becomes fully formed in The Vampire's Threat, and comes full circle with Diva's theme in Vampire Battle. All three themes come together in the penultimate cue The Final Battle, with Saya's theme and Diva's theme with the vampire's theme playing in the spaces and yields one of the biggest battle cues I have listened too. Now this is only the first one and there is a second soundtrack to this one that fills in some of the blanks but the truth is the major themes for the series are present on this album thus making it the better choice. This score proves that Mark Mancina has the chops to write but the lack of output he yields is disappointing, but the quality of his work especially with this one, more than makes up for it.
