The Story:
The story of a geriatric ward in a small Yorkshire hospital threatened with closure.

The Score:
“What I love about Allelujah is the way it poses awkward moral questions and makes one confront deeply uncomfortable issues and Richard Eyre’s film doesn’t spare one the stark realism, much of it unadorned and stronger for not being softened or sentimentalised by music.
The music in fact belongs to the world outside this world of a geriatric ward in a North Yorkshire hospital. I was writing more about the world of the family dynamics and relationships surrounding this story – the history of these peoples lives – their lives before they were thrown together here.
And these people being recognised again as people through the eyes of a young compassionate doctor. The ability of those losing their memory to still recall songs is well documented and is at the heart of Allelujah. They sing together for music therapy and I wanted there to be a connection to their singing in the score – and so there are wordless voices in some sections. I hope listening to the soundtrack people will get a clear sense of the film and the issues it deals with. Allelujah was a great experience for me and it was so great to be involved in a project with so much passion from everyone involved.

The Composer:
The five time Academy Award-nominated composer George Fenton has been writing for the cinema for more than 40 years. For some, he is known for his powerful political biopics, such as Gandhi and Cry Freedom; for others, he is the man behind the spirited music of comedies like Groundhog Day and You’ve Got Mail, or the sensually charged Dangerous Liaisons and Final Analysis.
Over his career, his list of regular collaborators include Richard Attenborough, Neil Jordan, Ken Loach, Terry Gilliam, Stephen Frears and Andy Tennant. In the field of television, Fenton had scored most of the classic David Attenborough documentaries, such as Blue Planet and Planet Earth, which had also been turned into successful concert series. MovieScore Media released Fenton’s score for Trevor Nunn’s Red Joan (2019) starring Dame Judi Dench and Sophie Cookson, and last year’s The Duke.
