Film Fest Gent celebrates 50th anniversary of '2001: A Space Odyssey' with film music concert

In 2018, Stanley Kubrick's groundbreaking masterpiece '2001: A Space Odyssey' is exactly fifty years old and that is worth celebrating. On 18 October, Film Fest Gent will be organising a concert, under the title '2001 and Beyond: A Symphonic Odyssey' with a wide variety of scores from films taking place in space on the programme.

On 18 October, Film Fest Gent will be organising a concert, under the title '2001 and Beyond: A Symphonic Odyssey' with a wide variety of scores from films taking place in space on the programme.
The concert explores the musical richness of different generations of composers who gave their own sound to traveling through the universe. The concert also brings a piece of cosmic film music history to life, with an emphasis on the great composers of the seventies, eighties and nineties of last century, complemented by work by contemporary colleagues.
'Even half a century later, '2001: A Space Odyssey' remains an unparalleled reflection on man in time and space, and still can be considered a landmark in film history on musical level too. Kubrick's final choice to choose exclusively classical pieces for its soundtrack, meant that you could no longer listen to Johan Strauss's 'The Blue Danube' without seeing the images of majestic spacecraft gracefully rolling through the universe. Kubrick's audiovisual language is so compelling that image and music remain forever connected, so it seemed interesting to us to listen and see how other film composers and directors explore space in their films.' - Patrick Duynslaegher, artistic director of Film Fest Gent
Brace yourself for the space operas of John Williams, Jerry Goldsmith, John Barry, Elliot Goldenthal, Harry Gregson-Williams and Cliff Martinez. And let yourself be overwhelmed and carried away by the soundtracks from 'Star Wars', 'Star Trek', 'Moonraker', 'Alien', 'The Black Hole', 'Solaris', 'The Martian' and many others.
Also included onto the programme, is Alex North's original score for '2001: A Space Odyssey'; a score that Kubrick replaced at the very last minute by existing classical music from, among others, Johann Strauss.
