The outstanding score to Mary Magdalene was composed by Icelandic duo Hildur Guðnadóttir & Jóhann Jóhannsson, tragically departed last month at the top of his game. He recorded incredible neo-classical albums published by Deutsche Grammophon along as monumental film scores (Prisoners, Sicario, Arrival).
Cellist Hildur Guðnadóttir counts many collaborations such as Throbbing Gristle and Múm. She also toured with Animal Collective and Sunn O))).
This highly awaited album is one of the best things we’ve heard from legendary Jóhann Jóhannsson – assisted by Hildur Guðnadóttir –, as moving as innovative.

Mary Magdalene guides us to an understanding that everything we need is within us – a love that knows no time or space. Finding composers that can evoke this spirituality and a connection to Mary was challenging, but beautifully achieved in this collaboration.
Hildur, you always drew me in, your music emotionally raw, stripped back, with a primal and melodic beauty.
Then those deep dark primitive sounds, shaking the earth, summoning God! Your instinct for Mary was never off, you seemed to know her pain, and your music sits in her heart, in her every breath.
Jóhann, your gift to the world is immeasurable and your music entwined with Hildur’s with such grace and beauty, you can feel the love and respect you both hold for each other. I know how much you cared for Mary, and you lifted us up into the light, amongst the angels and the oscillating notes – the vibrancy of accession… I remember the reference picture we had to inspire the vocalists at the air studios recording; two people
staring up through circling angels into a tunnel of light… And as the vocalists (exploring this image) layered their voices, I found a tear falling down my face, and I looked across to find you, a tear mirroring mine, and a priceless smile filled with so much joy and innocence.
It was like you had the greatest secret in the world. Oh Jóhann, why did you have to leave so early. We are so deeply saddened that you are no longer here with us, and to have personally witnessed the innumerable composers and assistants in Berlin that would walk fire for you is a testament to how much you are loved.
Hildur, thank-you for your grace, strength, and love… How you held things together shows such courage, and I know your team will walk fire for you too. Hildur, Jóhann, and their team; Viktor, Gunnar, Sam, Kjartan – thank you for this wonderful score.
