The Beehive is about a mischievous, delusional old romantic who hatches a dastardly plan to win the love of a totally disinterested woman. I wanted a cheeky and chirpy feel but with enough depth to evoke a kind of blundering futility as we watch Barry Drone descend into chaos in his attempts to win the heart of Beehive landlady, Betty Queen.
Although it's a comedy, the film is very intricately plotted so I didn't want the music to sound too flippant. The score makes use of spritely and chromatic melodies over classical string orchestrations. I've used playful whistling over pizzicato strings to set a carefree and romantic tone, and for darker moments; a kind of baroque dissonance that plays well with the religious undertones of the film.
