The Story: The story of trailblazing 19th-century photographer Eadweard Muybridge, who changed the world with his camera.
The Score: “The music for Exposing Muybridge tries to accomplish three things. First, it wants to capture his complicated personality in the the form of strange, tritone-infused intervals within his main melody, bass clarinet sneakiness, and off-kilter banjo colors (as in ‘Exposing Muybridge Title’ and ‘Slow Exposures’). Second, it tries to portray the chaos of the 19th century American West. ‘Selling the West’ embodies the frontier experience, while ‘Alaska’ and ‘Gift from the Box’ feature Tlingit musician Ed Littlefield. Leland Stanford, whose horses modeled for Muybridge’s most famous photos, is acknowledged in the pompous ‘Stanford the King’. Finally, the score attempts to underline one of the film’s most important themes: the question of whether a photograph can tell the truth. This question is pondered in ‘The Machine Can’t Lie’ while the whimsical ‘Basic and Deluxe’ shows that while the horse photos were real, many of Muybridge’s other works were ‘photoshopped’ whereas ‘Can’t Believe What You See’ gives us the unsettling feeling we get when we realize that some things we believe turn out to be false.” – Chad Cannon
The Composer: Composer Chad Cannon got his film scoring background in the orchestration team of Conrad Pope on Alexandre Desplat’s Godzilla and the last two The Hobbit films. His music for Paper Lanterns was nominated for Best Original Score for a Documentary IFMCA Award while the composer was also nominated for Breakthrough Film Composer of the Year. Chad frequently works on Asian projects as he is also the founder of the Asia / America New Music Institute (AANMI), which promotes music relationships between the two continents. MSM’s previous collaborations with him include The Cairo Declaration (co-composed with Ye Xiaogang), Devil’s Tree: Rooted in Evil and the documentary Qinghai: Our National Park.
