Paul studied at Goldsmiths' College, University of London (B.Mus-Hons.), and at the Royal Academy of Music (M.Mus, Adv. Diploma).

At Goldsmiths', Paul ran the Composers' Forum and founded the Goldsmiths' Players, a chamber orchestra specialising in contemporary music. At the Royal Academy, Paul was awarded the Charles Lucas Composition Prize and the Arthur Hervey Scholarship.

While still a student, Paul was commissioned by the BBC and the Arts Council to devise and compose a music film, which became Pictures on the Piano. Since then, he has been constantly active in music for both television and film.
