Highlights from The Hanging Tree (1959) by Max Steiner

Disques Cinémusique presents a digital version of the best selections from the original soundtrack to the movie The Hanging Tree (1959), composed and conducted by Max Steiner (1888-1971). It’s the first entry in our catalog for the Golden age composer of Gone With the Wind and so many other great achievements in American film music history.

Steiner paved the way for scoring for any cinematic genre, especially the western. Despite The Hanging Tree is one of his most praised works, only the theme song written by Mack David and Jay Livingston, performed by Marty Robbins, was released on record.

The City of Prague Philharmonic recorded a seven minutes suite which concentrates on the action music written by Steiner. No doubt that some specialized labels based in USA tried to settle an agreement in order to reissue on CD the complete original soundtrack. While waiting for this dream to come true, we have extracted these highlights of the score from the best DVD release of The Hanging Tree.

The longest track of our program features the moving love theme with the dialogue between the two main characters: the lonely doc Frail (Gary Cooper) who treats a young woman, Elizabeth (Maria Schell), victim of a carriage accident which left her temporarily blind.
