At the beginning of the 1960s, Italians began producing feature documentaries shot in exotic countries, which emphasized eroticism and unusual situations, sometimes depraved ones. The most famous example is Mondo Cane, whose music was successfully entrusted to Riz Ortolani and Nino Olivieri.
Several other great Italian composers of the time were put to contribution by wise producers. Indeed a rich and various musical tapestry was required to boost this kind of sensational movies.
The Italo-Japanese co-production Il Paradiso Dell'Uomo has sunk into oblivion but its music deserved a second life, and not only for the benefit of the composer’s fans. Most film music buffs who don’t yet know Piero Umiliani, or consider him only as a jazz specialist, will be surprised to discover a versatile creator who masters writing for a large orchestra. His instrumental score along with with two songs performed by Lang Chang offer a very enjoyable mix of oriental and western styles.
